Description

No. 1 Bridge Place is a town house that has been converted into a shop and guest house, dating from around 1770. The building is constructed of painted sandstone and brown brick in Flemish bond, with its ridge running parallel to the front.

The exterior features a semi-basement and three storeys. The stone basement has a simple plinth, with part-glazed framed and boarded double doors that have been replaced, along with a raised band. The upper storeys are brick. On the first storey, there are two doors side by side, each with a flight of steps divided by a brick parapet; the northern flight has been renewed, while the southern flight is made of stone. The northern door is a six-panel door with a looped radial-bar fanlight set in a simple moulded case. The southern door features two fielded panels above two flush panels and has a patterned radial-bar fanlight, likely from around 1900, set in a pedimented case with panelled plinths, fluted pilasters, swags, and a dentilled open pediment.

The windows include almost flush sashes with keyed wedge lintels, a painted stone sill to a tripartite four; twelve; four pane sash on the first storey, a sill band with two sixteen-pane sashes on the second storey, and painted stone sills to two unequal twelve-pane sashes on the third storey. The building is topped with a stone cornice and blocking course, and the parapet end-gables feature flush chimneys, with an additional chimney located behind the ridge. A cast-iron rainwater pipe is situated at the junction with No. 3. The rear of the building has various window styles. The interior could not be inspected but is likely to contain features of interest.
