Description
The Great Sutton War Memorial is a stone cross located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Evangelist, approximately 15 meters west of the lychgate. The memorial features a tall cross set on a complex base designed to hold wreaths and floral tributes.
The cross head is elaborately designed as a Maltese cross embraced by a plain equal-armed cross. Daisies are carved into the spaces between the cross arms, and the monogram IHS appears at the center of the cross head on both the front and rear faces. The tapering cross shaft rises from a pedestal with a partially crenellated top. This pedestal is positioned on an octagonal plinth, which in turn rests on a square base. Four corniced blocks are placed at the corners of the base, connected by a low step on each side.
The dates 1914 and 1918 are carved in low relief on the front face of the cross shaft. The main dedicatory inscription, also in low relief, is on the front face of the pedestal and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ & IN MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR +/ + THE PATH OF DUTY/ WAS THE WAY TO GLORY."
Another dedication is inscribed around the front three faces of the octagonal plinth, stating: "SONS OF THIS PLACE, LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID/ THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD/ THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT YOU WHO LIVE MAY REAP/ A RICHER HARVEST ERE YOU FALL ASLEEP."
The names of those commemorated from the First World War are recorded on either side of the pedestal, while the inscription for the Second World War is on its rear face, reading "1939 – 1945/ (7 NAMES)." The most recent inscription on one of the rear faces of the plinth notes the Falklands War of 1982, with "FALKLANDS WAR/ 1982/ (1 NAME)."
