Description
Iron Bridge Lodge is an estate house built in 1894 by Douglas and Fordham for the 1st Duke of Westminster. The building features a red brick lower storey set on a projecting sandstone plinth, with a jettied half-timbered upper storey and red tile gabled roofs. It has two chimneys adorned with blue diapering and moulded brick spiral flues. The structure is two storeys high with three bays, and at the north end, there is a single storey gabled brick loggia supported by two shaped oak posts.
The lower storey has stone-dressed mullioned windows with two, three, and four lights, featuring ogee heads, while the upper storey has oak-mullioned windows with ogee heads, including two four-light oriels topped with jettied gables that contain small attic windows. The gable beams are heavily carved, and the openwork oak bargeboards are finished with ornate finials. The windows are fitted with rectangular leaded glazing that has shaped panes at the top of each light. The oak boarded doors, which are set in stone-dressed openings, have ornate wrought iron hinges and handles.
Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase with shaped newels and moulded flat balusters, along with six-panel doors that feature moulded stiles, muntins, and rails, as well as vertical mouldings at the centers of the panels. The design draws inspiration from around 1600 and is picturesquely situated with views of the river and the Iron Bridge.
