Description
The bridge carrying Buerton Approach over Aldford Brook was built in the 1870s for the 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster, likely designed by or associated with Alfred Waterhouse. It is constructed from buff sandstone and features cast iron parapet panels. The bridge has three Tudor arches that are separated by buttresses, which stand on rounded, rusticated cutwaters. The lower courses within the archways are also rusticated, and the edges of the arches have recessed quadrant mouldings. The parapets include moulded plinths supported by carved heads acting as corbels, and they have moulded copings. Between the copings are rectangular cast iron panels with cusped quatrefoils that hold shields with armorial bearings in relief. These panels were likely part of railings designed by Porden around 1810 for the forecourt of Eaton Hall, which were removed by Waterhouse. Each side of the bridge has two rectangular piers with one parapet panel between them at each abutment.
