Description

The Iron Bridge over the River Dee, built in 1824 by William Hazledine for the 1st Marquis of Westminster, is a Grade I listed structure. This bridge features a single span of 50 metres that forms a lofty segmental arch with open spandrels. The spandrels contain lattice bracing decorated with cusped mouchettes, trefoils, and quatrefoils. The bridge is constructed of cast iron and has yellow sandstone abutments. It includes cast iron railings with dogbars and cusped heads on the panels, as well as cast iron double gates at the crown of the bridge. The carriageway bands feature raised cast lettering, with the names of William Hazledine, Director, and William Stuttle, Clerk of Works, on the north side at the west end, and William Crossley, Surveyor, and William Stuttle, Junior Founder, on the south side at the east end. The massive sandstone abutments are curved in plan and end in octagonal piers. Notably, the western half of the bridge is located in Poulton civil parish.
