Description

The walls and gates between Old Church Lane and the Old Churchyard are constructed from sandstone and date from the early 19th century, while the timber gates are from the late 19th century or designed in a late 19th-century style. The walls are made of tooled coursed red sandstone blocks, featuring steeply weathered projecting copings. There are three chamfered square gateposts made of sandstone, each with projecting plinths and moulded caps. The framed four-bar gates include a carriage gate with twelve cross-braced panels and a footgate with six panels, all with stop-chamfered timbers. The gates hang on heavy wrought iron hinges and are of a design commonly found in the village, likely created by the architect John Douglas. Additionally, a short curved section of later wall, which is included in the listing, connects the churchyard wall to the former Institute.
