Description

The monument to John Francis Egerton, constructed in 1846 or 1847, is a Grade II* listed structure designed by G G Scott and Moffat. It is made of yellow sandstone ashlar and features a square base that supports a square monument with diagonal buttresses and an octagonal turret topped with a spire and cross.

On the south front, the lower body has a diaper pattern with an offset above it, and there is a damaged sculpted panel depicting a house and classical figures. This is framed by a moulded surround with small ballflowers. Above this, a second offset has a row of ballflowers directly below it. The diagonal buttresses include canopied niches with figures of women in medieval attire, set on semi-octagonal bases supported by semi-octagonal columns with floral capitals. The centre features two-light blank tracery with cusped lower lights and trefoils above, all within a cusped surround. The gable above is adorned with crockets and a trefoil that contains a coat of arms.

The octagonal turret above has blank tracery and a moulded cornice, with gables and an octagonal spire rising above. The tops of the diagonal buttresses are decorated with gargoyles and crocketed pinnacles. The right and left returns are similar to the front, but they have blank panels instead of the sculpted panel. The rear is comparable, featuring a bronze plaque that commemorates John Francis Egerton and details the events surrounding his death at Ferozapore in April 1846. This monument is one of the more elaborate examples of Victorian monuments inspired by the Eleanor Crosses.
