Description

The walls with a pair of gates and an overthrow are located along the southern boundary of the walled garden at Eaton Park Gardens. Built around 1870 by Alfred Waterhouse for the 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster, the walls are made of brown brick, while the gate piers are constructed from brick and red sandstone. The wrought iron gates, painted gold and black, were designed by Edwin Lutyens in the 1890s. The walls feature steeply weathered corbelled brick copings, with the piers having flush stone quoins, classically moulded stone plinths and caps, and ball finials topped with cones. The gates include lockrails adorned with intricate scrollwork, and a symmetrical panel above that showcases foliated W's, coronets, and additional scrollwork. Below the lockrails, there are closely spaced formed and curved bars decorated with floral and foliated motifs. The triangular overthrow is embellished with scrollwork and features a central portcullis medallion, crowned by the Grosvenor sheaf. Narrow ornate wrought iron side screens separate the gates from the piers. In terms of design and detail, these gates are second only to the Golden Gates within the Eaton Estate, serving as a division between the major eastern ornamental garden and the walled kitchen and nursery gardens.
