Description
A pair of wrought iron gates with an overthrow, dating from around 1880, are located southeast of the Garden House in Eaton Park. They were commissioned for the 1st Duke of Westminster, likely designed by Alfred Waterhouse. Each gate is divided into panels by three vertical rails and, in the lower part, four horizontal rails, all square in section. The panels feature circular section ironwork, which ends in closely curled shapes of flattened section, along with tendrils or wrought leaves and flowers. The decorative overthrow mirrors the ironwork of the gate panels but is topped with wrought iron pineapples set within coronals of leaves. Some elements reflect 13th-century French motifs. The gate piers are made of red sandstone, complete with plinths, caps, and finials.
