Description
The Lock to Lower Basin, designed around 1795 by Thomas Telford, is located at the Ellesmere Port and Neston Docks Basin. It features two pairs of wide, heavy timber lock gates that connect the lower basin to the Ship Canal, which originally linked to the Mersey. The lock gates are equipped with heavy wrought iron pivoting gear and are topped with catwalks made of four planks, supported by stanchions and double chain safety rails. All the timber used for the lock gates was renewed in 1983, while the original ironwork was preserved. The structure is complemented by stone retaining walls.
