Description
The lighthouse, marking the entrance from the Mersey Estuary to the Shropshire Union Canal before the Ship Canal was built, was constructed in 1881 by engineer G R Webb. It features a tapering octagonal tower made of red and blue brick, topped with a lantern beneath a shaped octagonal cupola. This lighthouse stands on the site of an earlier lighthouse that existed from around 1835 until 1881.
