Description
The Old Rectory is a large parsonage house built in 1896 by T M Lockwood & Sons for the 1st Duke of Westminster. It features stone-dressed red brick walls with blue diaper patterns, set on a stone plinth. The roof is made of grey slate, hipped to the right (west) and has sandstone-coped gables on the left and south garden side, adorned with ball finials on the ridge-stones and kneelers. A central chimney made of stone-banded brick has a moulded stone cap. The building has two storeys and attics, arranged in three bays. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed with bronze casements, although the leaded glazing has been removed except for the attic windows. The entrance boasts ornate nine-panel oak double doors framed in a simplified Doric case made of yellow sandstone, likely sourced from Manley quarry. Inside, the rectory features a rich interior with an open-well newel staircase supported by heavy turned balusters and finely crafted six-panel doors. The dining room showcases an ornate chimney piece, possibly designed by Lockwood, along with oak wainscotting and a panelled ceiling made of oak and plaster. The exterior presents a severe expression typical of Eaton Estate buildings.
