Description
A row of six court cottages built in 1872 for Mr T Fluitt. The cottages are constructed of Flemish bond brown brick with a grey slate roof. They are two storeys high, with each cottage featuring one bay. Doorways and windows are topped with segmental brick arches. The cottages originally had framed and boarded doors, though those to numbers 5 and 6 have been altered, and 12-pane horizontally-sliding sash windows. There are flush eaves and brick ridge chimneys. A restored outshut is located at the rear of each cottage. Gamul Place, refurbished in the late 20th century by Chester City Council, is likely the only surviving example of court housing in Chester, differentiating it from alley housing and larger courtyard houses. The interiors have not been inspected. These cottages represent a rare survival from the late 19th century in Britain, linked to earlier building traditions. Records from the Chester City Council Improvement Committee from November 20, 1872, document the construction.
