Description

South Lodge, along with its railings, gates, and gatepiers, is a Grade II listed gamekeeper's house, originally known as Gate Lodge, built around 1755 with later additions and alterations from around 1870. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring a timber-framed first floor with rendered infill and a plain tile roof. It stands two storeys tall, though it was originally a single-storey rectangular block with a canted bay window on one side. A wing has been added to the northwest.

The entrance front has a projecting stone plinth with a central door flanked by 2-light casement windows, all featuring ashlar sills and wedge lintels. The first floor jetties out, showcasing a central gabled bay supported by angle brackets, which forms a porch over the door below. This projecting bay includes a central 3-light casement window and is adorned with richly decorated bargeboards.

To the right, there is a later 19th-century addition, which transformed the Lodge into a gamekeeper's house. The left-hand reveal features a canted bay on the ground floor and a three-light casement window on the first floor, with cusped framing on the gable and richly decorated bargeboards. At the rear, there is a canted bay to the right with a later addition to the left.

Adjoining the house and extending southeast from the left reveal are two rows of iron railings with spearheads, connecting to a gate screen made of wrought iron railings. This gate screen is flanked by two square rusticated ashlar gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps and iron finials. The double gates between the piers exhibit some Art Nouveau influence, with similar wickets on either side.
