Description
Black and White Cottages is a symmetrical pair of cottages built in 1886 by Douglas and Fordham for the 1st Duke of Westminster. They feature an oak frame with plaster panels set on a sandstone plinth, topped with grey slate roofs. The cottages have red brick chimneys with spiral-moulded flues and sandstone caps. They are two storeys high, with a jettied upper storey and a front gable supported by shaped brackets. The exterior includes rectangular panels, some adorned with chevrons and patterned timber decoration. The windows are oak mullioned with patterned leaded glazing, although modern replacement windows are present at the rear. The doors are shaped and boarded, made of oak, and fitted with ornate wrought iron hinges. Inside, there are newel staircases with flat shaped balusters and four-panel doors featuring moulded stiles and rails. The design and detailing of the cottages are reminiscent of an oak-framed farmhouse from around 1600.
