Description

Numbers 1 and 2 Balcony House, along with the attached railings to the front steps, are located in Parkgate Village, Neston. This building, originally a house that later became assembly rooms, is now divided into three houses. It dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries, and features a balcony added in 1865. The exterior is finished with incised render on brick and includes a cast-iron balcony. The slate roof has brick coped gables and rendered stacks.

The building stands three storeys high with a basement and has a five-window front. Access is provided by two flights of nine steps each, leading to early 20th-century front doors that have tall overlights. The steps are adorned with balustrades made of openwork panels and flat handrails. The windows on all floors are recessed sashes with single glazing bars, slightly segmental heads, and painted stone sills, with the second-floor windows featuring an extended raised sillband.

The first-floor windows are complemented by an elaborate balcony that has an openwork balustrade, supported at the front by slender shafts with traceried spandrels. The returns of the balcony extend to the left and right, resting on traceried brackets.

To the left, there is a three-storey, one-window gable end with a three-storey, one-window wing to the left, and further left is a two-storey, three-window wing. The windows on the three-storey sections mirror those on the main front, while the two-storey wing features sashes with exposed weight boxes and glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected.
