Description

Nos. 60-68 Lower Bridge Street, also known as Nos. 2-6 Gamull Terrace, is a group of five lock-up shops and five cottages built in 1872 by T Fluitt on the site of a former boarding school yard. The building features stone-dressed patterned brick with a grey slate roof that runs parallel to the front.

The structure is three storeys high, with the shops projecting beneath an access gallery leading to the cottages, likely aligned with the former Row. A covered stepped access between the shops numbered 60 and 62 Lower Bridge Street provides entry to Gamul Place. The cottages, which are one bay each, have shopfronts that include a three-pane window above a panelled timber riser and a recessed door to the side, although the door to No. 62 has been altered. The gallery above the shops features a simple stone-coped rendered parapet.

The cottages are characterized by bolection-moulded six-panel doors with simple overlights and one recessed two-pane sash window on each storey. The lower storey has sandstone sills, while the upper storey features a sillband for the sashes, blue brick bands, flush sandstone lintel bands, and blue brick patterns. There is a dog-tooth course below a slightly projecting stone-capped brick parapet, and three plinthed chimneys are located in front of the ridge and three behind it. The rear of the building, at gallery level, has one-storey gabled rear wings, framed and boarded yard doors, and four-pane sash windows. The interiors have not been inspected.
