Description

Tytherington Old Hall is a house, likely originally a farmhouse, that is now disused. It dates from the late 16th century and has undergone extensive alterations and renewals in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed on a stone plinth with a stone-flagged roof. It has a two-storey, L-shaped plan, constructed in two phases, with the earliest part also likely being L-shaped and extended to the west. The main front now faces north, featuring a gabled cross wing to the left and a long range to the right. The ground floor is made of roughly coursed and squared rubble, while the upper floor is timber-framed, characterized by close studding with a middle rail and strong raking braces that create a herringbone pattern. A moulded stone cornice in the gable supports a jetty. The upper floor has inserted or renewed windows, with some original small mullioned windows below; however, the principal openings have all been renewed. The long range to the right has been extended by a single bay that displays simpler close studding with arched bracing. The timber-framing on the south elevation follows a similar pattern, with most openings renewed, but the doorway at the angle of the main range and gabled cross wing features a cambered head and may be original. There is a single stack on the rear gable wall. The interior has been almost entirely renewed, featuring new timber and concrete blockwork.
