Description
Birch House and the attached railings are a pair of houses, originally three, located at the corner of Bridge Street and Waterloo Street West in Macclesfield. Built around 1820, the buildings are constructed of brick with a stone-flagged roof and consist of three storeys and a basement.
The facade facing Bridge Street features a three-window range with a central entrance. The doorway is set in a Tuscan pedimented case and is elevated by steps, showcasing rusticated stonework. It has a six-panelled door with a plain fanlight above. The flanking windows are tripartite sashes, with 12-pane sashes on the upper floors. The central first-floor window is distinguished by a rusticated stone head, while the other windows have flat-arched brick heads.
On the Waterloo Street West side, there is a six-window range. The return to Birch House includes a ground-floor square oriel window, with a four-pane sash window situated above it. No. 10 Waterloo Street West, which is part of the same build, forms a five-window range to the right. Its doorway is positioned to the right of centre within a Tuscan pedimented porch, also raised on steps and accompanied by wrought-iron railings. This doorway features a six-panelled door with a radial fanlight. The windows here are 12-pane sashes with flat-arched brick heads, and the left-hand window has a channelled stuccoed head. The buildings also have a moulded wood eaves cornice, although part of it is now missing, and they feature end wall and axial stacks.
