Description
Shrigley Cottage is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed, buff sandstone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof with a stone ridge. It has a rectangular plan that originally included a gable-entry by the stack into the main room, with two pairs of rooms beyond. The cottage is single storey with an attic and has a four-bay west front. The 19th-century wooden casements are in two lights, and there is a single gabled dormer. A 20th-century glass door has been inserted towards the left side of the front.
On the left gable, there are remains of a hood mould and three massive exposed roof timbers. Inside, the original heck post has been replaced in the 20th century, but all beams, including minor members, are chamfered with flat stops in the main room. The room partitions are timber-framed. In the attic, there is a tiebeam and collar roof truss with truly massive overlapping purlins, one of which is forked, and a ridge.
