Description

Tabley Old Hall is a derelict house, originally built around 1670, which contains the remains of a fine timber-framed hall dating back to approximately 1380. The structure is made of red English garden wall bond brick with stone dressings and stands three storeys tall.

The entrance front features a partially surviving E-shaped layout, with a central projecting stone porch that has an arched opening. To the left of the porch are two plain-shafted columns with Ionic capitals, which rest on pedestals adorned with lozenge-shaped panelling. The right-hand pair of columns is missing, but their plinths and capitals remain. Above, there is a dentil cornice.

The first floor is constructed of brick with stone quoins and includes a three-light mullioned window with a hood mould. The second floor is blind but features an oculus. The recessed wall to the left has collapsed, but the projecting wing to the left has a four-light stone ovolo-mullioned basement window, a four-light ovolo-mullioned and transomed ground floor window, and a four-light mullioned window on the first floor.

To the right of the porch wing is another four-light ovolo-mullioned window, with a similar window on the first floor and an oculus on the second floor. The wing to the right has stone quoins and features four-light mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors, along with an oculus on the second floor. The remains of the hall are now on the ground and were illustrated in Country Life on 14 July 1928.
