Description
The stables at Tabley House, built around 1760, were originally a stable block and have since been converted into a complex of 21 dwellings. The building was significantly remodeled and extended between 1995 and 1996. Designed by John Carr, it features red brick laid in Flemish bond, with stone dressings and a green slate roof with lead flashings. The structure has a rectangular courtyard plan, with the south front measuring 23 bays in length and slightly projecting lateral wings of 3 bays each. There are stone bands between the floors, and a central courtyard portal with a shouldered stone surround and consoles on either side that support a cornice. This portal was widened in the early 20th century to allow for motor vehicle access. The windows on either side of the portal have horned sash frames, with 3 x 4 panes on the ground floor and 3 x 2 panes on the first floor, all featuring splayed heads and stone cills. While the outward-facing elevations have retained their historical character, the remaining parts of the complex have been remodeled and extended with 20th-century components and materials to create domestic facades. The building is listed for group value, recognizing its significant massing and exterior character in relation to the setting of Tabley House.
