Description

The crossbase in the churchyard is a Grade II listed structure located on the south side of Red Lane in Disley. This socket stone for two crosses dates back to before the conquest and was discovered in 1958 at the coordinates SJ 9738 8444. It is a large, sub-rectangular stone slab featuring two circular holes of different sizes. Shallow grooves run through the centers of these holes and are perpendicular to them, with a piece of lead set into one of the holes. This stone is believed to have been the setting for two Anglo-Saxon crosses that are now lost.
