Description

This is a terrace of six houses and two shops, likely built around 1840, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The buildings are constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof. The terrace has a symmetrical appearance with a 14-window front, and the shops form projecting bays at each end. The houses have round-arched doorways with four-panelled doors, each topped with a traceried fanlight set within a simple architrave featuring incised decoration. The windows are nine-pane sashes with flat-arched brick surrounds. A simple moulded wooden cornice runs along the top of the building. The shops in the projecting end bays each have two windows above the shop front, and are topped with hipped roofs. A late 19th-century shop front is located on the corner with Peel Street, and another on the corner with James Street, both featuring incised decoration to the architrave and doorway. Chimneys are located on the end walls. Numbers 1 to 5 James Street form a return of this terrace.
