Description

Ollerton Grange is a country house dated 1901, designed by J Brooke. It features red English garden wall bond brickwork with sandstone ashlar dressings, stone mullions, transoms, coursing, coping, lintels and sills. The roof is tiled with prominent, tall groupings of diamond-shaped stacks irregularly distributed. The plan is irregular, with a service court attached to the northeast.

The exterior is two and three storeys high and built in a Jacobean style. Key architectural elements include groupings of shaped gables, a lead-roofed octagonal stair turret to the main facade, a six-light transomed and mullioned canted bay window on the south facade incorporated into an octagonal, crenellated attachment, and a square bay window attached to the forward-breaking central gable of the garden facade. The windows are mainly square quarry leaded casements, with some later alterations using plain sheet glazing. The main entrance is a two-storey shaped gable with ball finials to a round-headed porch, with ashlar to the first storey. This includes two-stage half-Tuscan columns on a base plinth with scrollwork to the entrance opening, changing to square columns on either side of a cypher set on a shield framed by strapwork courses, and culminating in obelisks flanking a two-light transomed window above. A stone cartouched shield of arms is also incorporated into this facade.

The interior retains original features, including a half-panelled hall with a panelled ceiling and open screen, Jacobean fireplaces, inglenooks, friezes, swags, and strapwork. There’s also a first-floor gallery corridor with semicircular arches.
