Description
Sutton Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely built in the late 17th century, with alterations made over the years. It was extended in the 18th century, and a wing was added in the early 19th century to create a double-depth layout. The building is constructed of brick and features roofs of grey slate, with the rear wing having an asbestos roof. The early 19th-century front wing is in Flemish bond and has two storeys with four windows. The rear wing has a parallel roof and is connected to the earlier structure under a continuous roof on the left side.
The front of the farmhouse includes a door with four fielded panels and a radial-bar fanlight set in a round-arched opening, along with replaced windows in their original openings. The front features wedge lintels, stone cills, and a band at the first floor. The rear wing does not have any externally visible features of special interest. Each wing has one gable chimney and one ridge chimney, and the rear wing was previously thatched.
Inside, the kitchen in the front wing on the left has sawn beams and exposed joists. The rear wing contains oak beams, an altered inglenook with an oak bressumer, and a damaged dogleg stair made of oak that has four flights leading to the upper storey and attic. This stair features vase splat balusters and square newels. There are two corner fireplaces in the upper storey, which were part of former adjoining rooms, and the internal partitions upstairs have been removed.
