Description
Thorp Street Mill is a silk mill that has been converted for office and commercial use. It was built around 1825 and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish and English garden wall bonds, sitting on a stone plinth, and features a roof made of Welsh slate and stone flags. It stands three storeys high and has 13 bays, with a former engine house and chimney located at the rear. The original pattern of openings has been modified during the conversion, with the addition of four entrances framed by moulded stone architraves. The taking-in door on the first floor has also been replaced. The windows have all been renewed and consist of 36-pane sashes set in mainly original openings, which have flat-arched brick heads and stone sills. The rear elevation includes a projecting tapered square chimney shaft, and the lean-to engine house at the base of the stack has been altered. Inside, the structure features transverse wooden beams supported by cast-iron and wooden columns, and the roof has been reconstructed with 12 queen post trusses.
