Description
The Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct and adjoining bridge, located a quarter mile south of the Woodhouse Lane Aqueduct, is an aqueduct that spans the River Bollin, approximately 10 meters below. The canal was opened in 1776, with engineering by John Gilbert. The structure is built from ashlar stone and English garden wall bond brick. On the west side, there is a road bridge over the River Bollin. Both the bridge and the aqueduct feature retaining walls and segmental parapet walls. Each has a segmental ashlar keystone arch and band, along with two stone bands, brick parapet walls, and stone copings. The aqueduct wall is battered and has been largely replaced by concrete on the east side.
