Description
Knutsford Lodge Gateway and gates to Tatton Park is a lodge and gates built in 1810 by Lewis Wyatt. The structure is made of ashlar and features a triple gateway with a large central arch and smaller flanking arches, each fitted with cast-iron spear-head gates. The central entrance is highlighted by engaged fluted Doric columns that support an entablature with a triglyph frieze and a pediment topped with heavy acroteria. The semicircular archway is adorned with voussoirs and a scrolled keystone, while the simpler outer arches complement the design.
The flanking return walls on either side incorporate a lodge to the west, which is single-storeyed and constructed of ashlar with a slate roof. It has a doorway facing the main driveway and two 12-pane sash windows on its north elevation, along with an axial stack. The lodge's doorway is mirrored on the opposite side of the gates by a blind recess. To the north of the entrance gates, the flanking walls each feature blind square-headed recesses that balance the openings in the lodge. The interior has not been inspected.
