Description

Crompton Road Mill is a silk weaving and cotton spinning mill built around 1825, with later additions from the late 19th century. The mill is constructed of brick and originally had a slate roof, which has since been replaced with corrugated sheeting. It is situated on a steeply sloping site, featuring a three-storey wing that faces the street and a five-storey main range that runs parallel to the street. The main range consists of twelve bays, while the three-bay wing at one end faces the street and is attached to the gable of the main range. The gable was refronted or extended in the late 19th century.

The entrance is located in the gable, featuring a round-arched doorway on the ground floor and loading doors on the upper floors, with a hoist that projects over the upper loading door. There are two windows to the left of the entrance and an inserted lower doorway, along with three windows in the wing. All windows have transoms with flat-arched heads. Many of the original small-paned fixed light windows remain in the main range, although some have been replaced with top-opening lights, all set in their original openings with flat-arched heads. A privy tower projects from the southeast angle of the building.

Inside, the structure includes a single row of slim cast-iron columns that support timber beams, with a timber roof structure. The mill was formerly steam-powered, and the engine house, which is no longer intact, was located to the east of the mill building.
