Description

Hatherton House is a house dating from the late 18th and early 19th century, with additions and alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is built of red Flemish bond brick with yellow brick dressings and ashlar, and has a slate roof with lead flashings. The three-storey entrance front is symmetrically arranged with three bays. It has an ashlar plinth and yellow brick quoins. The central bay features a mid-19th century ashlar door surround with pilaster strips and a moulded round arch containing a plate-glass fanlight and a door with four raised and fielded panels, with bay leaf wreaths in the spandrels. Above the door is an ashlar window surround framing a sash window with 3 x 4 panes, featuring scrolls and a pediment supported on acanthus brackets. Ground-floor window openings to either side have wedge lintels, later altered to accommodate French windows. First-floor windows to the sides have 4 x 4 sash panes with stone sills and wedge lintels. The second floor has three windows of 4 x 2 sash panes, the central window having a moulded ashlar surround. The garden front has projecting wings with yellow brick quoins and pedimental gables. The left wing has a canted ashlar bay window. The recessed body between the wings has a wrought iron verandah on the ground floor and three pairs of French windows above. The first and second floors have windows with 4 x 4 and 4 x 2 sash panes, similar to those on the entrance front. The projecting wings also include single bays with this arrangement and painted ashlar surrounds to the pedimental gables.
