Description

The Broomlands is a country house dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of rendered brick with a slate roof and lead flashings. The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical five-bay design to the garden front. The central bay features French windows on the ground floor and a two-light casement window above, with a stone sill. Flanking bays have shallow bows, each incorporating two bays with French windows on the ground floor and two-light casement windows above, consistent with the central bay. A recessed wing is situated to the left, displaying a triple window on the ground floor and two two-light casements above. A further wing is recessed to the right, also with a tripartite ground floor window and two two-light first floor casement windows. A later doorway has been inserted to the left of the ground floor window. The entrance front has a colonnade porchway on the left with three openings divided by ashlar Doric columns, complete with antae on the sides. To the right of the porchway is a two-light ground floor casement window and a pair of French windows. The first floor features two two-light casement windows on the left and a three-light window on the right, all with painted ashlar sills.

The interior, now divided into three dwellings, largely retains the original layout. The entrance hall includes a round-headed archway supported by Doric columns, leading to a wooden staircase with barley-sugar balusters, a moulded handrail, and newels sculpted as greyhounds gardant, each holding cartouches with a leopard gardant in relief. A blocked passageway to the left of the staircase displays ribbed plaster vaulting. Two ground floor rooms have white marble chimney pieces decorated with flowers and ribbons in relief. One first floor room features a Gothic chimney piece. The first floor landing showcases two basket arched doorways with moulded wooden surrounds. The right-hand wing, viewed from the garden front, appears to be a later addition, incorporating a dining room on the ground floor and a nursery wing above. The left-hand wing may have been added concurrently with the right wing.
