Description
The Church of St John is a Grade II listed building, dated 1837, designed by E. Lapidge. It is constructed from yellow sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. The church has an undifferentiated nave and chancel, with a vestry located to the north-east and a porch at the western end.
The western facade includes a chamfered plinth that runs throughout the building, a gabled porch with a pointed arch, a hood-mould, and floral label-stops. It has projecting springers and moulded coping on the gable. A datestone, which also displays the coat of arms of the Delves-Broughton family, is set at the apex of the gable. The west front is accented by angle buttresses with offsets and gabled caps. A triple lancet window with a hood-mould and floral label-stops is centrally positioned and projects into the gable, which also features a roundel with a dog's head in relief. The corners of the building are topped with octagonal finials with spires, and a bellcote is located at the summit of the gable, complete with a gable and an arched opening that has a hood-mould and label-stops.
On the south side, there are four lancet lights with hood-moulds and square label-stops, with buttresses positioned between them, similar to those on the western end. The north wall mirrors this design but includes a vestry in the easternmost bay, which has a double lancet window at its gable end. The eastern end resembles the western end but lacks a porch, and the triple lancet window is set lower. A cross finial adorns the gable.
