Description
The bridge over the railway, located approximately 150 metres southwest of Turton Tower, was constructed between 1847 and 1848 for the Blackburn, Darwen and Bolton Railway. The resident engineer for the project was Terence Flanagan. Built from rock-faced and ashlared gritstone, the bridge features a medieval style with a four-centred arch. At the west end, piers rise above the parapet, forming rectangular machicolated turrets. The turret on the south side includes a viewing deck that is accessed by steps and is protected by a stepped parapet. The ashlared parapets, which are stepped above the centre of the arch, have cross-shaped arrow slits and terminate with polygonal pseudo-turrets on the outer faces. Each of these also has a corbelled pseudo-turret on the outer face, with its machicolated cap resting on the coping. This bridge is the more elaborate of two bridges built as part of an agreement with James Kay of Turton Tower, who was a director of the railway company.
