Description

51 and 53 James Street are a pair of brick buildings with stone dressings, dating from the late 18th century. They stand on the north side of St John’s Church, Victoria Street, and contribute to a group value with the church and numbers 25 to 31 (odd) Victoria Street.

Number 51 has a panelled door leading up to steps with an iron rail, and an arched doorway with two orders. There is one sash window on the ground floor and two on each of the upper floors, each with flat brick-arched lintels. Number 53 is larger, and features a centrally placed panelled door leading up to three steps, with a segmental arched fanlight above. The doorway is framed by Ionic three-quarter columns, a frieze, a cornice, and a rudimentary pediment set within a segmental brick arch. The ground floor has two double sash windows, while the upper floors contain three modern windows. A rainwater head dated 1791 is also present.
