Description
The Church of St John Evangelist, built in 1789, is located on Victoria Street and is no longer used for ecclesiastical purposes. An addition was made to the vestry in 1865 by J Brindley, and galleries and chancel additions were completed in 1891. The church features a prominent west tower that consists of four stages. The lowest stage is rusticated, while the first storey has chamfered corners. The second stage, which serves as the belfry, is octagonal and is accented by Doric columns at the corners, with the top stage also being octagonal. The west façade includes a Venetian-style window, and the side walls are adorned with pedimented Venetian windows, complemented by semi-circular clerestory lights. The Church of St John and the adjacent properties at Nos 25 to 31 (odd) form a group with Nos 51 and 53 James Street.
