Description
Orrell Fold Farmhouse, also known as Orrell’s Farmhouse, is probably an early 17th-century farmhouse, which has been altered and is now used as a house. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with a base of two courses of larger blocks and some quoins. The roof is slate-covered, with a chimney at the left gable and another behind the ridge. The original plan was likely three bays, but may have begun as two bays, with outshots to the left of the first bay, extending beyond it, and another to the rear of the first and second bays. The walls appear to have been raised at the rear. A doorway with a plain 18th-century-style surround is located at the junction of the first and second bays. To the left of this doorway is a similar doorway that has been blocked and converted into a window, set beneath a large cambered lintel with a chamfered soffit. The second bay features a large six-light double-chamfered stone-mullion window with a hoodmould, and the third bay has a similar but smaller three-light window. On the first floor, a round-headed light is above the blocked door in the first bay, and there are three other windows, now casements set in chamfered square openings. Inside, original features include a stone heck with a peephole, and two original roof trusses with very large cambered tie-beams. There are also blocked old windows in the rear wall, although otherwise the interior has been altered.
