Description
The machinery pit for lock gates No. 4 was constructed around 1880 by Henry W. Wake for the River Wear Commission. This ashlar-lined pit is located immediately west of the eastern swing bridge at the dock and is long and rectangular, positioned at right angles to the bridge. It contains the former chains and cog wheels used for the lock gates. When the swing bridge opens, its long arm rests parallel to this pit. There is also a cast-iron round plate that once covered the lock gate hinge, which is now in the dock workshop. This plate features a low relief inscription that reads: "RIVER WEAR COMMISSION/ NO.4 LOCK GATES/ 1880/ H.W. WAKE. C.E./ ENGINEER."
