Description
The structure is a lock built in 1890 for the River Wear Commissioners, located at the north end of the tide basin in Sunderland. It features steel gates, which were replaced in 1955, and is constructed with high ashlar walls and a central pier. The lock includes two sets of gates and is equipped with hydraulic machinery. It was installed concurrently with the swing bridge connecting the half tide basin to Hudson Dock North, and both are operated by the same engine and accumulator housed in the Dock Office. This lock is an early example of dock machinery that utilizes the hydraulic system invented and developed by Sir William Armstrong.
