Description
West Hendon House is a house, now serving as a home for the elderly, built around 1830. It incorporates an earlier 18th-century house and has late 19th to early 20th-century additions that match the original style. The building is constructed of garden wall bond brick with tooled ashlar dressings and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof. The earlier house, which is now the rear wing, is rendered.
The exterior is three storeys high with a total of 27 windows, including additions on the left side. The main front has angle pilasters, a left tower addition, and canted bays on the right return. The original three-window front includes a central half-glazed four-panelled door with an overlight, set within a prostyle wooden porch supported by square columns. The sash windows, some with glazing bars, have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The deep eaves are supported by paired scroll brackets, likely added later. The right return garden front features a central and right part that were added later, including a glazed wooden porch flanked by wide canted bays with hipped roofs.
The rear elevation displays a Venetian stair window in the main building. The two-storey, three-window rendered earlier house, now functioning as the kitchen wing, has sashes with glazing bars in broad boxes. Inside, the entrance hall features an Ionic screen, and the doors to the right are adorned with architraves that include paterae.
