Description
The terrace walls and piers to Ashburne House, likely built around 1860 for the Backhouse family, are constructed of ashlar. These low walls feature chamfered coping and enclose the terrace to the south of Ashburne House. The walls begin at steps on the west side that lead to the former grounds, now known as Backhouse Park, which is a public park. The walls continue along the southern side of the terrace and return along the eastern side as far as the steps leading to Ryhope Road. In the center of the southern wall, the terrace projects outward to create a platform that overlooks the grounds. Each corner of the wall is marked by a panelled square pier that includes a plinth and cornice.
