Description

This is a terrace of six houses, now used as offices, a shop, and a restaurant, built in the second quarter of the 19th century. The houses are located at West Sunniside, Sunderland. They are constructed of garden wall bond brick, with painted ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof, featuring brick chimneys. Each house is two storeys high with a basement, and generally has three bays, except for No. 48, which has four.

A flight of steps leads to double-panelled doors set within Sunderland-type doorcases. The doorcases at Nos. 43, 44, and 48 feature Tuscan pilasters and an entablature, while No. 45/46 has Corinthian pilasters with a later pediment. Original doors remain at Nos. 44 and 48; No. 48’s door has a moulded pediment. The windows are sash windows with wedge stone lintels and projecting sills to the ground floor, as well as a sill band to the first floor. No. 47 has had its doorcase and ground-floor windows removed and replaced with a shop window. Modern roof lights have been inserted into the roof of Nos. 43 and 48, and there are also transverse-ridge chimneys.
