Description
The Shipwrights Public House is a public house that was originally two houses, dating from the late 18th century with some alterations. The front is covered in painted incised stucco on a stone base, featuring painted flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The rear is constructed of rubble made from limestone and sandstone, with brick dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof with stone gable coping and rendered chimneys. The building has two storeys and six windows. The doors at the center of each house have been renewed and feature painted flat stone lintels. The sash windows, some of which have been renewed, have similar lintels and painted projecting stone sills; some windows have been replaced with top-hung casements that include glazing bars. Each house has end-ridge chimneys topped with corniced and tapered square yellow pots.
Inside, there is a cast-iron kitchen range located against the right side of the central party wall, with a founder's plate from Steel & Co., Sunderland, set in a chamfered and corniced stone surround. This surround and range were moved from an upper room by the current owner. The upper floor features four-panelled doors, brick-arched fireplaces, and a queen post roof that is visible in the right section.
