Description
Cleadon House is a house, supposedly built in 1738 for John Dagnia, a glass manufacturer from South Shields. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a roof made of plain tiles. The building has a simple block plan, standing two storeys high with five windows. This includes a central Venetian staircase window, all featuring broad moulded glazing bars, raised surrounds, and projecting cills. The house has a plinth, raised quoins, a band, and coping to the parapet of its parallel-ridged roof, along with four corniced end brick chimneys.
There is a later off-centre porch made of brick, which has raised quoins and a raised surround to the door, featuring six fielded panels and a flat roof. The south front facing the garden has a scrolled pediment above the central door, moulded architraves around all windows, and large oblong fanlights with radial decoration above two side doors. A 19th-century conservatory encloses these three doors.
Inside, the staircase features a dado rail, cornice, and a wrought-iron balustrade from around 1750, designed in a rococo style with leaves, seed-pods, and curved bars. The front porch has been added beneath this staircase. The doors to the main rooms in the hall have corniced picture panels, and fluted pilasters support an elliptical arch leading to the narrower section of the hall opposite the stairs.
