Description

This 18th-century grotto is a garden feature originally located within the grounds of Cleadon House. It is constructed of roughly squared coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings, built into and retaining a hillside. The south elevation features three pointed arches flanked by two similar niches. A square cover now sits in the ground, likely replacing a former lantern. Inside, the grotto is octagonal, containing three niches along the north sides. A lake once stood in front of the grotto.
