Description
Ravensworth and Briary are a pair of semi-detached houses located in Westoe Village, built between 1892 and 1896 by architect Henry Grieves. They are designed as a symmetrical composition, constructed from brick with stone and terracotta dressings, and feature a steeply pitched, hipped, tiled roof. The houses are two storeys tall with attics, and all original glazing remains in the sash windows.
The main elevation includes an octagonal corner tower at each end, with each face of the tower featuring a window. The towers rise one storey above the eaves and are topped with domes, while the second storey is illuminated by circular windows. Each house has a tripartite ground floor window, with a central sash flanked by narrow sashes. Above these windows, there are semi-circular arches with lunette panels filled with terracotta. The first floor of each house is lit by two sash windows with rusticated heads, and above them is a coved eaves cornice made of terracotta, decorated with swags. Each house also has a recessed two-storey, one-bay wing that contains the entrance.
