Description
The 1914-18 War memorial is located in the churchyard of St Bartholomew in Longbenton. It features a tall and slender tapering octagonal white granite cross shaft topped with a bronze foliated circular cross head. The center of the cross head displays the entwined initials I H S, which are the first three letters of the Greek spelling of Jesus. The cross stands on a pair of tapering octagonal pedestals, all resting on a circular base.
The front face of the lower plinth bears the inscription: "LEST WE FORGET" and "ERECTED BY/ PUBLIC/ SUBSCRIPTION." The inscriptions on the second, third, and fourth faces of the upper plinth read: "1914-1918/ TO THE/ GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN FROM THIS/ PARISH/ WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN/ THE/ SERVICE OF THEIR/ COUNTRY/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ AND WHOSE /NAMES ARE RECORDED/ ON A/ TABLET IN THE CHURCH."
On face six of the upper plinth, the names of ten men who fell on active service but are not recorded on the church tablet are inscribed, while face one lists the names of eight men who died of their wounds.
