Description
The milepost at the junction of Front Street and Manorfields is a late 19th century to early 20th century structure made of cast iron, painted white with black lettering. It features a shield-shaped plaque that displays the distances to Newcastle (4 miles) and North Shields (6 miles), along with a pair of opposing directional arrows. The milepost stands approximately 0.7 meters high and is mounted on a circular shaft, which includes fixings for a lower rectangular plate and a maker's plate below. This milepost was erected on an old route to Blyth and was cast by Smith Paterson Ltd. of Blaydon. It is recognized for its well-preserved condition, attractive design, and its original location on a historic route.
