Description
Benton House, now known as the Conservative Club, is a house that dates from the late 18th century and the 19th century. It was built for T.C. Bigge, who lived from 1739 to 1794. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof. It has two storeys and is composed of one central block with five bays.
The main block includes an inserted sash window in a central Tuscan porch that has fluted necking. There are glazing bars on two sashes on either side of the porch, but the first-floor sashes have been renewed and do not have glazing bars. The building has sill and floor bands, a dentilled broken pediment over the central three bays, and a dentilled eaves gutter cornice. A floating cornice is present above the central window.
To the left, there is a wing that is set back, featuring a pedimented first bay with tripartite windows that are transomed on the ground floor and sashed on the first floor. An eaves cornice is located under a keystoned roundel in the pediment. The linking section has a half-glazed central door with a large overlight and three bays, which contain renewed sash windows and an early 20th-century pedimented dormer. The roof is hipped and has ashlar chimneys.
The interior has been damaged by fire. Additionally, a shop has been inserted in the rear of the first bay.
