Description
The farm buildings to the east of East Benton Farmhouse consist of byres, stables, cart sheds, lofts, and a granary, with an engine house attached. These structures date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with the engine house specifically dated 1843, as indicated by a cast iron plaque featuring the monogram of John and Benjamin Green. The buildings are constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins, while the engine house is made of brick. They are topped with Welsh slate roofs that have stone gable copings and are arranged around a yard with an inner fold-yard wall.
The north cart shed features square piers supporting three elliptical arches, which are positioned under three square lights that are partly boarded up. There are similar piers and wooden lintels on two later cart sheds added to the right of the east range. The buildings have pecked stone lintels above boarded doors and Dutch doors in each range, as well as above a pitching hole on the left, and above all windows on the left and some on the right, all with projecting stone sills. Wood lintels are used for two boarded openings on the right. The engine house at the rear of the east range displays a high internal ashlar wall leading to the granary, with a top beam of large scantling shaped to accommodate a shaft.
